From Dated to Rustic Modern: Kitchen Remodel

As you all should know, we have been under a major house remodel. For months and months and months. A few weeks ago I was finally able to host my own house party!  The upstairs is still a work in progress but the downstairs is basically done.  Talk about exciting. After all that time to have a gorgeous, fully functioning first level. Today, I want to show you the kitchen remodel. I think the before and afters are quite drastic, but in a way the after pictures don’t do the ceiling height justice.

This the facing the front door obviously. I apologize for keeping the same refrigerator and stove, I am just too cheap to replace them. And honestly, it is okay. We moved the door over a bit and extended the cabinets up to the real ceiling, not this soffit stuff that was in there.

Talk about a big difference. Our cabinets were custom made by our good and amazing friends, Curt and Wally Tenbusch. We decided to go with white oak and put a grey based stained. They have a beautiful rustic, modern look to them.

The old kitchen was so lacking in space because the dining table and chairs are in there. Ugh, so much wasted space. Now it is open and beautiful. I love how the sage green looks with the cabinets.

The open concept is an amazing feature too!  I just love how the flow between the kitchen and now dining room is. We can have people over and talk while I am cooking and getting things ready.

The only thing I miss is that all of the original character was removed when the 1970s remodel happened. But back then it was what they did. They got rid of the old and made it trendy in all of the 1970s glory. So we went with a rustic modern style in the downstairs area.

One of my favorite features is this under cabinet system. Instead of putting in all of these outlets in our tile and having to wire them all. We found this under cabinet system and we just had to wire 3 times!  When I say we wired, I mean my father in law. But talk about money saving and visually appealing. The system has lot of add ons too. As you can see we have these under cabinet lights and they are dimm-able! We have a USB charger, a tablet holder and if we want to we can order a Bose sound system and it can play music from our cell phone or tablet. This system is just amazing and I love it!

One of the problems with the old kitchen was that there wasn’t a pantry. When you have a lot of people living in a house sometimes storage gets a little rough. When we took out this strange hallway and closet structure we knew we wanted to add in   a pantry. Well, we got it and pantry is one of my favorite parts of the kitchen!

So my pantry isn’t exactly perfect. I am still working on figuring out how I want to organize it. But I love it not to store food so much, but to store odd shaped stuff!  It is the perfect place for slow cookers and cook books and my vacuum.

What is your favorite part of the new kitchen? And which room do you want to see next?

I love the light above the counter eating area. Where did you find it?

Thank you! I forgot to put where I got the lights. They are from Lowe’s! I was so excited when I found them

Those cabinets make my heart go pitter-patter for real!! So gorgeous! We’re putting on an addition right now but the kitchen won’t get a new makeover for quite a few years yet. However, when it does, cabinets like those will be my dream! I also love that wall color, gorgeous! 🙂

Thank you so very much! It was a long process and stressful at times. But totally worth it. I absolutely love the colors and the feel of the kitchen now. Just an FYI, our cabinets are white oak (that kind of wood gives that kind of rustic modern look). Then I went into the paint store and we picked a grey paint color out that matched the grey in our counter top and just added a little bit and tested it on a piece of wood until I liked it.
