Around here life is crazy, messy and we love every minute!

What Does the Milk Vein Do?

Again, my readers continue to impress me! Cow part #4 is a Milk Vein just like the majority of voters said. The milk vein is one of the main veins that take blood from the udder to the heart. Did you know that a cow has two routes to get blood from the udder to the heart? When she is lying down the milk vein is blocked and there is a large vein that isn’t visible from the exterior of the cow that will take the blood to the heart.

Back in the old days, farmers thought the larger the milk vein a cow had the more milk she would produce. We eventually figured out that wasn’t true at all! The size of the milk vein has nothing to do with the amount of milk she will produce. Her environment and several other things have a larger impact on a cow’s milk production.

Now, we have our final cow part to guess at! Take advantage of the poll. Guess the part labeled #5.

Thanks to the Fountain Central FFA for the cow parts diagram. http://www.sefschools.org/staffweb/ffa/index.htm

Interesting also is that the milk vein could be sometimes more accessible then the jugular vein. the problem is that drugs injected there could pass to near connective tissue and couse venous thrombosis.
The “milk vein” also konown as subcutaneous abdominal vein
is the only vein in the abdominal cavity without corresponding artery.

Just a quick comment about the description above. The milk vein is NOT one of the main veins that take blood from the heart to the cow’s udder. The milk vein is one the main veins that take blood from the mammary gland to the heart. Only arteries carry blood from the heart. The external pudic artery which leads to the mammary arteries takes blood from the heart to the cow’s udder.

Thank you for the correction Dr. Plaut. Apparently I wasn’t channeling enough of my anatomy class last night! I think I have it all fixed.
